Exercises to combat eye strain...
Mar 3rd 2025
Eye strain affects most if not all Lash Stylists. Symptoms include tired, burning and/or itching eyes, blurred or double vision, headache, and increased sensitivity to light. To help, here are several exercises you can do during the course of the day. Let us know what works for you or if you use a technique not mentioned...

1. Palming
Rub your hands together to warm them up. Close your eyes and place your palms gently over them, creating a dark, warm space.
Hold for 1-2 minutes, breathing deeply. This helps relax your eye muscles.
2. 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This reduces eye strain caused by prolonged close-up work.
3. Eye Rolling
Sit comfortably and roll your eyes in a circular motion. Do 5-10 rotations clockwise, then 5-10 counterclockwise.
This helps improve eye mobility and reduces stiffness.
4. Focus Shifting
Hold your thumb about 10 inches from your face and focus on it. Then shift your focus to an object farther away (e.g., across the room).
Alternate between near and far objects 5-10 times to strengthen eye muscles.
5. Blinking Exercise
Blink rapidly for 10-15 seconds to lubricate your eyes. Follow with slow, deliberate blinks for another 10-15 seconds.
This helps prevent dry eyes, especially if you’re in a dry or air-conditioned environment.
6. Figure Eight Tracing
Imagine a large figure eight (infinity symbol) about 10 feet in front of you. Slowly trace the shape with your eyes, moving smoothly and without straining.
Do this for 1-2 minutes to improve eye coordination.
7. Near and Far Focus
Hold a small object (like a pen) close to your face and focus on it. Slowly move it away from your face while maintaining focus.
Bring it back close and repeat 5-10 times.
8. Side-to-Side Eye Movement
Look to the far left, then slowly move your gaze to the far right. Repeat 5-10 times to stretch and relax your eye muscles.
9. Eye Massage
Gently massage your temples and the area around your eyes in circular motions. Use your fingertips to apply light pressure to relieve tension.
10. Hydration and Eye Drops
Keep your eyes hydrated by using preservative-free artificial tears if needed. Staying hydrated by drinking water throughout the day also helps.
Tips: Take regular breaks to rest your eyes and avoid prolonged strain. Ensure your workspace is well-lit to reduce unnecessary eye strain.
Practice good posture to avoid neck and shoulder tension, which can affect your eyes.
Incorporating these exercises into your daily routine can help maintain your eye health and keep you comfortable during long lash styling sessions.
